Very nice post. I like it when people are giving arguments about why some vehicle is good for all the family. but they should suggest some really professional metal swing set in the case all the family is riding a motorcycle or a wheel vehicle. Especially in the case the family has children.

My sister and I have rode since we where little (we are now 15 & 17) and we know other kids, older and younger, who ride and we think the ban is stupid! we all promise not to eat the parts!

Hey Eric, thanks for the awesome comment, i appreciate it. Dealers are probably hit the hardest by this act. It will be tough for little kids not to ride, but for dealerships, youth bike sales make up a large portion of your income, and I fear that many shops will fail without this income. I totally agree with you in that I hope the government listens to our response and gets this act reversed before our industry suffers un repairable damage.

Great article Mike. As a member of a family that has owned a motorcycle dealership for 30 years this has to have came at the worst time. I hope law makers will listen and at least make some changes or else the whole industry may hurt.

Hey Lacey. I totally agree with you that this is entirely not right and that it will deprive many kids of the sport we know and love. You are 100% correct that for serious motocross racers, it is a life and much more than a normal sport. it's my escape, it helps me think, and relax.
i can't imagaine a world without kids riding.
i want my nephew to be able to share the same love i do for dirtbikes.

Hey Frank and Vinnie, thank you for the AWESOME comment. I totally agree that MX makes a seriously positive impact on many kids lives and without it many kids would not have ended up where they are today. That is extremely good news about cobra, I was not aware of that before, so it is awesome to hear that they will continue to produce motocross bikes targeted at the younger audience. I also second you about the soil sampling. The motocross industry has been indulging in a lot of practices in the past 50 years which I believe really need to change in order for our sport to move into the next level. Hopefully we can smarten up and get moving on our way to the 21st century!

MX has certainly had positive affect on you and my son and most of the folks we know at WSP and NEMX and the other clubs. It is basically a whole lot of fun and offers families a special way to play and work together. It will be too bad if this broad brush effot by seemingly well intentioned folks blots out a fine detail in the fabric of our lives. Prior to its passing (HR 4040) I had hoped to get some of Vinnie's younger relations into the sport to provide a platform that will increase our family's involvement and enjoyment of the MX culture. It is an idiotic outcome for inaccessible parts of motorcycles to fall under this law and so we should not accept this law without scruitiny. I hope it is fried to a fairthee well in the media and legal system - certainly, our sport should not be forced to suffer. I talked with Cobra Thursday and they said they will not be closed down since they are made in the USA. I assume they also have elected to pass the necessessary testing to clear their products.
I have to say the lead in fuels is a concern to me and I actually hope the sport smartens up before someone does a whole lot of soil sampling. Little kids do play at the tracks in the dirt.
It would really be a shame to suffer an air bubble in our schedules while this little time bomb is diffused.

This law will ruin all of those child's dreams, and will severely cut off the flow of new talent into the pro ranks. Thank you for your support in this fight!

Thank you Mike for posting this we all need to act now. I have a 6 year old son that has been riding for 3 years. He is so happy to ride and has been waiting for the 2009 racing season. How do I tell him there might NOT be a racing season for him, and if there is he can't brake any parts on his bike or might not be able to fix it. This is going to be a huge hit on the best sport on the planet. Everyone must spread the word and do our part, the future of the sport is on the line.......Thanks again Mike

Truthfully Mark, I am unaware of what exactly it means. I do know that for a fact motocross bikes targeted to the youth market are no longer for sale, and parts for late models will not (legally) be available. As far as youth riding goes, I am unaware of what this act means. I have not read anything, but I assume that practicing will still be legal, as it is not actually "sanctioned" by the track how racing is. However, I could be wrong. I'll try to keep you posted as new information comes out, and if you find anything out, please let me know!

P.S. Thanks for the comment, although I wish it wasn't under such dire circumstances.

AMA's government relations staff has set up a Legislative Alert at

This system works incredibly well because it is easy for people to do (you don't even have to be an AMA member) and it results in a letter that goes to the person's US Representative and Senators. Letters are treated more seriously by elected officials than phone calls and also, AMA can track them and report the totals to Congress.
